About our brand

Our clothing brand started from a concept and a mission. In the middle of the 2020 Covid Pandemic, what began as a local T-Shirt printing service to raise money and build a school or program that empowers kids in impoverished urban communities, branched into an entire clothing brand. "I really just needed something to do at that time" (Harold Defreeze, Founder). Jobs were closed, and the streets of our Oklahoma City busy roads and typically congested areas looked like a scene from an apocalyptical ghost town. (Harold Defreeze) -- "Being the person I am, I have always tried to think of new ways to cultivate my entrepreneurial spirit. The pandemic just gave me more time to brainstorm."

Mule4orty is more than just a clothing brand - it has a unique story and meaning behind its name. The name "Mule4orty" was inspired by a phrase originating in the early 1900s. During this time, a "mule team" was a standard means of transportation for many Americans who lived in rural areas. These mules were strong, hardworking animals that often carried heavy goods and supplies.

The phrase "mule for forty acres" referred to the idea that if a person owned a mule, they could cultivate and maintain a plot of land that was 40 acres in size. This concept was particularly significant for African Americans freed from slavery after the Civil War. Owning land symbolized freedom and independence, and many formerly enslaved people worked tirelessly to achieve this goal.

As the founder of Mule4orty, I wanted to pay homage to this critical moment in American history by incorporating the phrase into its brand name. Just like a mule was a powerful tool for cultivating the land, our clothes can empower people to chase their dreams and achieve their goals.
